Installing a two-line phone jack in a two-story home
Question:
It sounds like you want to splice before the wire gets to the box on the side of the house? Not sure whether that belongs to you or the telco. I think it belongs to them. So it could cost you if you mess with it and then have additional line added down the road. When I did my home office, I wired directly to the box and used liquid nails to hold the wire under the siding. I used white cat 5 instead of phone line so I’d have 2 extra pair if I needed them later. I’d just run it under the trim and find a nondescript place to drill a hole and pull it into the attic. Then snake it down a hole between to studs, cut your sheetrock and wire it up. If you use cat 5 you’ll have 2 extra pair wired to the box for any future installations. And since that is where the telco will drop off additional service, you won’t have to jerry rig any splices later on. -Thanks -Matt – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – > I have a room in my home that needs a two-line phone jack installed > and is on the second floor. Fully charged cordless drill with a 6 inch long 1/2 inch bit. > 2. 10 feet of string or 2 feet longer than the height of the wall. > 3. A narrow fishing sinker or anything that will fit thru the 1/2 inch > hole while tied to the end of the string. > 4. A standard wall type phone jack w/ 4 conductors (it will be flat > and NOT have the 2 nubs used for hanging a wall phone on). > 5. Either a plastic single gang cut-in box with the 2 plastic screw > flaps (also known as an ‘old work’ box) or a mounting ‘ring’ which is > basically a stamped sheet metal ring that fits into the hole and you > bend the tabs (ears) into and against the backside if the wall to hold > it in place ( They are sold near the jacks in bags of 2 in most home > centers). > 6. Some phone wire > 7. Box of small gray wirenuts > 8. A light for the attic. Since you will need both hands free a Mini > Mag light with a few winds of electrical tape wrapped around the back > end so you can hold the light in your teeth or a head light will make > life easier in the attic. > 9. Wallboard saw or a Roto-Zip if you are a True Guy
